Ottawa, November 24, 2021 – Denise Amyot, President and CEO of Colleges and Institutes Canada issued the following statement on the Speech from the Throne to open the first session of the 44th Parliament of Canada.
“After nearly two years of a pandemic, Canada needs to focus on how it will move forward and rebound. The government expressed this clearly in its Speech from the Throne, which looks towards building a better future.”
“The government can count on Canada’s colleges, institutes, CEGEPs and polytechnics to support efforts towards a green, inclusive and resilient recovery. “
“We share many of the government’s long-term objectives, including the commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Colleges and institutes lead by example in this regard and also aim to achieve carbon neutrality on campuses within that timeline. “
“To achieve net-zero emissions and support the economy of the future, Canada will need to train a new generation of workers with the skills required to build a green economy, involving new roles, sector sustainability strategies, and lots of innovation.”
“All across Canada, colleges and institutes are working hard to support diverse learners, employers and their communities. They welcome the government’s intention to increase immigration levels and will continue to support newcomers across the country with a variety of services, including language training as well as upskilling and reskilling opportunities that are adapted to their needs, and those of local employers.”
“Finally, this Speech from the Throne marked another step on the path to reconciliation. Not only was it read by the first Indigenous Governor General in Canada’s history, but it is clear that the government continues to see reconciliation as a key objective for the years ahead.”
“We look forward to working with the government to advance these priorities and to support all Canadians at this critical time in our country’s history.”
