CICan’s cooperation projects with CAPES, Brazil’s federal agency responsible for quality and evaluation of graduate education under the Ministry of Education, support quality education in Brazil by providing professional development and learning opportunities to in-service primary and secondary education teachers.
The projects allow Brazilian teachers to learn about of the Canadian education system through professional development and experiential learning so they can adapt the methodologies, approaches, and techniques learned in Canada and apply them in their classrooms and schools in Brazil.
The projects also support internationalization by strengthening connections between Canadian institutions and their Brazilian counterparts.
Teacher Awards Program
In 2019, as part of a national competition in Brazil, 28 teachers from the Brazil’s public primary and secondary education network were awarded bursaries to fund a 7-day international learning experience in Canada. Participants were immersed in Canadian culture and visited elementary and high schools as well as post-secondary institutions in the Ottawa area to learn about the educational system in Canada. CICan also facilitated meetings to share information about the Canadian and Brazilian education systems.
Professional Development for Brazilian Primary and Secondary Education Teachers Program
In 2019 and 2023, two cohorts totaling 198 Brazilian primary and secondary education teachers participated in an 8-week professional development program hosted by Niagara College and Fanshawe College. Participants learned about the Canadian education system, student-centered approaches to engage students in active learning, inclusive classrooms, classroom management, and technology in the classroom. The program also emphasized experiential learning, with visits to local elementary and high schools, libraries, and community hubs.
